How you can use the 'magic' augmented triad for learning major triad shapes. Lower any note from the augmented 'template' and it becomes the 5th note of a close voicing major triad. Depending which string you lower will determine in which inversion the triad is. Close voicing triads will have one of the following interval spellings inside one octave: R-3-5 = Root Position 3-5-R = First Inversion 5-R-3 = Second Inversion Again, this trick will work from a close or spread voicing of the augmented

Here’s an awesome way to learn different dominant seventh inversions by using the diminished seventh chord. Simply, from any dim7 chord shape you LOWER ONE of the notes one fret (a half step). THIS note becomes the Root of a dominant seventh chord inversion. From one dim7 shape you can learn the Root position and three inversions of the Dom7. This works for ANY dim7 chord on ANY string set. Why does this work? The dim7 can be considered an altered dominant seventh chord. It’s a dom7(b9) with NO

What do you think about when playing a major scale? My advice is to think in terms of the numbers (the scale degrees)...this makes things much easier, particularly when you can't start from the Root note. ... #guitarlessons #guitartheory #musictheory #guitartips #guitarscales | Ry Naylor Guitar

All 7 chords in a major key live right next to each other on the Circle. Move clockwise and you’ll always get the same pattern: 3 major • 3 minor • 1 diminished. But here’s the part most players miss 👀 As you move from one segment to the next, one note stays the same. A shared tone links every chord as you travel through the key in fourths or fifths… Right back home to the 'one' chord. Once you see that connection, the Circle stops being theory - and starts being usable! [Concepts taken from TR

The major scale is the “source code” and diatonic 3rds are one of the quickest ways to see how triads, sevenths, arpeggios and modes are all derived. Here’s C major in diatonic thirds (everything comes straight from the scale — no sharps/flats). Up top is the Circle of Thirds showing the quality of each 3rd: 🟩 Major 3rd = two whole steps 🟧 Minor 3rd = W–H (or H–W) inside the scale Practice ideas: • Run it up and down • Switch string pairs (watch the G → B jump 👀) • Move it to a new root note

Unlock triads with my help. Check out my January teaching schedule: https://www.rynaylorguitar.com/guitar-live-lessons “Circle Progressions share a Common Tone” - Triad Concept number 1 from my course TRIAD5: INSID3 OUT. This is invaluable for a I-V progression in any key. Simply move one step clockwise around The Circle and you have your next Root note. Not only that, but the new Root will be a common tone between the two chords. If you can identify the fifth within a ‘one’ chord voicing, it is

Comment “PDF” for your FREE guide to all the close-voicing triads that you can play on the guitar fretboard. Two ways you can move vertically across the string sets with triads... Option 1 - keep the same VOICING (R-3-5) and the Root note will change. Moving up towards the ceiling the Root note will move down a perfect fourth (C-G-D-A). Option 2 - Keep the same ROOT (C) and the voicing will change. Dropping the highest note in pitch down an octave creates a different way to play the same triad.
